John Collingwood Bruce (1805-1892) was an ordained nonconformist minister and schoolteacher but better known as an historian of Tyneside with a special interest in the Roman Wall (Hadrian's Wall). He developed a numbering system for the structures of the Wall which became the standard means of reference.
