This booklet was produced to accompany 'The Beginnings of that Freedom' exhibition held in Westminster Hall at the Houses of Parliament in London in 2015. The exhibition was part of a series of events themed as 'Parliament in the Making' which commemorated the 750th anniversary of the Simon Montford Parliament (often considered the first elected Parliament) and the 800th anniversary of the sealing of the Magna Carta. The exhibition featured 18 large-scale banners commissioned from nine artists, each focussing on a different moment in the UK's constitutional history or the nation's journey to modern democracy. As well the reproductions of the banners, this booklet includes brief contextual notes on watermark moments in the UK's constitutional history such as the first elected Parliament, sealing of the Magna Carta, the foundation of the NUWSS, the abolition of the slave trade, the passage of the Race Relations Act in 1965 and the Putney debates of the English civil war in 1647.
