Geraldine Farrar (1882-1967) was an American lyric soprano, noted for her beauty, acting ability and the intimate timbre of her voice, and for her e seven-year love affair with Italian conductor Arturo Toscanini and close, possibly romantic, friendship with fellow singer Caruso.  She also found success as an actress in silent movies between opera seasons, inspiring a large following among young women - her fans were nicknamed Gerry-flappers.
