Agnes Salm-Salm was, to say the least, adventurous. An American, she met and married an Austrian Prince during the American Civil War. Her journeys with him are chronicled in her 'Ten Years of My Life', Her husband was part of Lincoln's military staff, and after the Civil War, the couple travelled to Mexico where her campaigning the save the Emperor Maximillian from execution became legendary. She accompanied her husband back the Europe, inhabiting the royal courts: her travelogue ends with the death of her husband in the Francp-Prussian war.
