Flinders Petrie was one of the finest Egyptologists of the 19th century but he began his archaeological career surveying prehistoric sites in the Britain.  He surveyed Stonehenge between 1874 and 1877 (commenting on the inferiority and inadequacy of previous surveys), creating the numbering system for the stones that is still used today.  His work also includes an accurate plan of the momument.  His survey remains one of the most accurate and thorough of Stonehenge and has provided the foundational dataset for much subsequent research.
