Alfred Kinsey's reports on human behaviour (this volume was preceded by a similar analysis of Sexual Behaviour in the Human Male (1948)) were controversial both in the scientific community and for the public, challenging conventional views on sexuality and frankly discussing topics widely held as taboo.  Based on ground-breaking research Kinsey's data showed that people were engaging in sexual activity more frequently and with more variety than some contemporary morality found acceptable.  They were nonetheless influential and seen by many as part of societal preparation for the sexual revolution of the 1960s and 1970s.
