Royal Gardens explores the development and history of Chinese imperial gardens from the Shang to the Qing dynasty.  As China developed economically the accumulation of wealth by its rulers allowed the building of a variety of vast gardens for plants and for activities such as playing chess, banqueting and hosting hunting parties.  Many of these gardens no longer exist but several have been preserved and those are depicted here, with many colour illustrations, maps and plans.
