Goddard became headmaster at Aske's School, Hatcham in 1932, when the country was suffering from the privations of the post-depression years .  His headmastership was to continue through the second world war, the following years of reconstruction and into the Cold War. With a wealth of detail recording the successes and failures of Aske's School, Hatcham, it also provides an insight into its evolution in a changing social environment.
