Luigi Giovannetti (1916 - 2001), also known as Luigi Pericle, was a Swiss painter and illustrator. Working as draughtsman for Punch Magazine, he began to development cartoon characters; and in 1953 he first drew Max the Marmot, the main character in a comic strip that was to become internationally recognised, and popular.  The first Max book, just called Max, was published in 1954 and several more followed in the 1950s.  Nothing by Max was the fifth Max book to be pushed in the English language.
