4th edition, first printing.  Complete in five volumes (a further supplementary volume to the fourth edition was published later).  All volumes uniformly bound in blue cloth with gilt lettering on spine, top edges sprayed  blue; colour plate frontispiece with further plate illustrations, of which 20 are in colour, and some in text illustrations, mostly examples  in music notation. 8vos.  Cloth a little rubbed on corners on a spine ends in places and few scattered mild marks but cloth still bright and gilding vibrant.  Volume five has one mildly bumped corner.  Slight toning to text block edges.  Internally all volumes neat, clean, bright and tight.  

The Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians is a substantial and authoritative reference work on all aspects of classical music and music theory.  It has gone through various editions since its first publication in 1878.
