First edition, second impression. 302pp, with illustrated plate frontispiece, tissue-guarded and 45 further plate illustrations. Red cloth-covered boards with bright gilt lettering and illustration front and spine. Top edge gilt. 8vo. Cloth slightly brushed, a little bruised at ends of a lightly sunned spine; spine has two dark marks. Hint of toning to endpapers; the two leaves bearing the list of illustrations are chapped along fore-edge with some loss to the first (not affecting text), else internally neat, bright and clean. One plate is loose but present.
A lovely and now quite hard to find copy of the second impression of this children's beloved classic which follows the adventures of five siblings as they discover a grumpy sand-fairy in the Kentish countryside. Remarkably bright and fresh.
