Leger was primarily a painter of modern life - macbhines, billboards, mathematical forms and urban man were both his inspiration and subject matter. Strongly influenced by the principles and forms of Cubism (particularly Cezanne), and his experiences on the front during the First World War, the resulting paintings are bold, daring and humane.
