John Peake (b. 1823) was son of a Leicester vicar.  He was educated at Rugby School, where he came under the influence of its headmaster and eminent poet, Matthew Arnold; and at Hertford College, Oxford, where he came under the influence of John Henry Newman (Cardinal Newman) and the other founding members of the Oxford Movement.  He was a curate in Ellesmere from 1848 to 1863 and then, after a brief period in Bedfordshire, became Ellesmere's vicar in 1864.
