viii, 114pp.  Bound in cloth-covered boards, decorated with blind tooling, gilt lettering on upper panel.  12mo. Cloth is faded in margins and over spine, gently rounded at corners and spine ends.  Upper text block edge dust dulled.  Previous owner's bookplate* on front paste down.  Some toning on endpapers else internally neat and clean.  Firmly bound and tight.  

The Census returns for 1861 were originally published in three parts.  This is part one, covering England and Wales.

*The bookplate is of Bryan Keith-Lucas, likely the English political scientist, Professor f Government at the University of Kent, Canterbury to 1977 and mentioned in dispatches during his military service in the second world war with the Buffs and Sherwood Foresters in north Africa, Italy and Cyprus.   Keith-Lucas's name has been overwritten with the name M F Fuller.
