Undated but circa 1880.  Stated 25th edition, 93rd impression. 248, vi, pp, with engraved frontispiece.  Red cloth-covered boards with black lettering front and spine.  12mo.  Cloth heavily worn, soiled and bubbled, chip in front spine joint, gently rounded at corners and spine ends.  Slightly cocked. Text block edges dull.  Front endpapers slightly soiled with partial stamp on front paste down, chipped in gutter.  Occasional toning in gutters throughout, else internally neat, clean and tight.

Jarrold & Son published the first edition of Anna's Sewell's pioneering animal rights novel in 1877.  It was an instant best-seller and was reprinted many times.  This undated but pleasingly early reprint dates from around 1880, published as part of Jarrold's Empire Education series, described on the title page as 'reading lessons on this favourite friend and servant of man'.  RSPCA promotional notes of the last leaf of the novel.
