First edition, first impression.  40pp, with full colour illustrations throughout.  Pictorial boards.  4to  Boards a little pushed at spine ends and corners, a little shelf worn and perhaps slightly faded.  Some faint spotting on endpapers else internally neat, clean, bright and tight.  In its original dust wrapper, rubbed at edges, crushed at spine ends, a little browned and shelf worn.

Carol Barker painted the pictures in this book after a visit to Greece (where the story is set).  British writer H E Bates (Fair Stood the Wind for France; Love for Lydia; The Darling Buds of May etc) liked the pictures so much he agreed to provide a text story to accompany them - and Achilles the Donkey was born.  There were to be two further Achilles stories from the partnership - Achilles and Diana and Achilles and the Twins.
