Louis MacNeice, perhaps better remembered as a poet, was a master of the broadcast play art form. The four plays collected here show great variety and the first, based on Browning's poem, Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came, in particular is a work of imagination with some of the qualities typical of MacNeice's poetry. MacNeice also provides a general introduction in which he discusses the theory of the broadcast play in a personal and semi-autobiographical manner.
