Complete in four volumes.  Illustrated edition.  lv, 468pp; lvi-lxxxiv, 469-934pp; lxxxiva-cxi, 935-1410pp; cxii-cxxxvi, 1411-1906pp, with numerous maps, colour plate illustrations, black and white plates and drawings in text.  In a handsome later binding (by Canterbury Bookbinders) of full green buckram cloth with gilt lettering on the spine.  All edges marbled.  Green satin ribbon markers bound in.  Cloth is very slightly bumped at spine ends.  Each volume has some small and neat pencil annotations on the front free endpaper, else neat, clean, bright and tight throughout.

First published in 1874, Green's 'Short History of the English People' was a landmark in the recording of English history.  Concerned not so much with Kings and wars, Green was more concerned with the people who made the nation.
